Tomatoes are so delicious but did you know that the way you eat them makes a difference to your health. FoodieGuru has never liked eating raw tomatoes, he prefers them cooked.
Either steamed/grilled or in soup!

And as for types of tomatoes? Although cherry tomatoes are so cute and easy to eat.. they are actually not to good for you, so next time you go grocery shopping, remember to buy the normal sized ones 🙂

How should you have you fish?

This trip to Los Angeles, I learnt something new..
Pop quiz. What is the healthiest way to consume your fish, sashimi or fried?

You may think that the fresher it is, the healthier, so if you answer is sashimi then you are wrong. Protein from sashimi is in a form that cannot be absorbed as easily by our body.

We will normally think if this fish has 100g of protein and if we eat the whole fish we have consumed 100g of protein. But this is not true. In its raw form, the body cannot absorb 100% of the protein.

Of course each types of fish will be different but for instance, we look at the salmon. We can only absorb 48% of the protein from salmon in its raw form compared to when it has been seared/aburi (lightly cooked on the outside) 60%.

Cooked fish transforms the meat inside to be in a form where the body can absorb the protein much better. Consuming cooked fish allows you to absorb all 100% protein. The method of cooking does not affect the amount of absorbable protein (smoked, made into soup, steamed, grilled, fried or boiled) but may affect other factors such as antioxidant, fat etc.

Another factor is consuming fish that has been frozen for too long/ not fresh. There is a time limit before the protein in the fish is completely gone. Fresh is always best!

FoodieGuru enjoys his sashimi, but if we talk about protein consumption, cooked fish is the winner!

P.s. For vegetarians, we have good news, the best protein is from soy milk so you don’t need to worry about the fish 🙂

Tips for finding the right shoes

Have you ever switched shoes and found that it caused you to have back pain, knee pain, or foot pain? Ill-fitting shoes put the feet in unhealthy positions, which can lead to an injury.

It all depends how sensitive we are to our bodies, some may not feel the pain of wearing the wrong shoe only to find out years later the damage can be costly in more ways than one, taking their toll on your spine, hips, knees, ankles and feet, while altering your posture and gait.

Signs you are wearing the wrong shoe

  • Your toes graze the tip of your shoes
  • You have blisters, calluses, or bruised toenails
  • Your arches ache at the end of the day
  • Your shoes are old (worn out shoes no longer provide the necessary support)
  • Other signs that you need an upgrade: Your shoes are noticeably creased, or they list to one side or the other when you place them on a flat surface.

Wearing the correct shoe is critical to your health, here is a fun infographic on how high heels affect the human body

Tips from FoodieGuru when choosing the correct footwear:

  1. Avoid high heels or platforms
  2. Stay away from soft/memory foam shoes. Reason for this is that the soft sole will mould to your foot so if your ankle falls either inwards or outwards instead of supporting the foot, it will support your bad habit.
  3. Don’t buy shoes that are “boat shaped” in other words have a curve in them. When the shoe is curving up at the end or in the inside, you will have trouble to step/ pump your foot flat on the ground. When you are constantly floating as you walk, the muscles of your body that end at your feet will not be able to engage.
  4. Avoid shoes that are too tight for obvious reasons
  5. Beware of ballet flats / shoes that have a very thin sole because as you walk, the lightness of the shoe will have you swinging your knee and legs more encouraging you to “kick” when you walk which will cause you to have a knee problem / injury.
  6. Even when you get a good shoe, remember that after a few months, it would have Moulded to the shape of your foot so it is best to replace these shoes and start neutral again while you fix your walk.

Tips to test the shoes:

  • If you have learnt natural walking, you can stand with your weight in the middle, and feel how your muscles and body posture is in the shoes your in.
  • Continue to key 1 and 2 – are you able to pump with these shoes?
  • Continue to key 3-5 is your body weight in the middle or does it start to sway to the left and right side of the sole of the foot?
  • Walk a few steps to make sure you can feel adjustments happening while wearing the shoes
  • To be more sensitive you can try wearing a bad pair of shoes e.g. Heeled and test them out the same way to really feel the best shoe for you!

FoodieGuru tried over 50+ shoes and found these two to be his favourite 🙂

Introducing the chosen classic: Men’s Nike Air Force 1 (low)
Make sure you don’t get the mid/high tops because the design and fit is different.
These shoes give maximum support for your foot and encourage proper usage of the muscles of your body. Unfortunately, the woman/kids versions of these shoes are not FoodieGuru approved as they have slight differences to the Men’s design and support.

Gastric problems

For those who have gastric problems, you have to particularly be careful with you choice of food as your stomach is more sentitive than others.

Some types of food will react in your stomach, unfortunately it is best to avoid the following, (in order from worst to bad).

Do not have any:

  • Soft drinks (Coke, Sprite, Fanta) good news – beer is OK. To understand the impact, drinking 1 can of coke can make your stomach upset for 1-2 weeks.
  • Pineapple
  • Vinegar
  • Grapefruit
  • Mangoes in particularly young mangoes
  • Thai mango salad
  • Tamarind

If you really want to eat the following from the list below , it is best to line your stomach with other food first and not have it as the first or last thing of your meal. for example: eat rice/ bread then eat mango then eat rice/ bread again. This will help reduce the reaction to your stomach lining.
If you really want have these between meals:

  • Oranges
  • Eucalyptus drops
  • Asam laksa
  • Lemon

Tips to help your gastric condition: when you eat, try to chew 30x before you swallow because it will reduce the workload of the stomach and also heal the stomach.

Other tips include eating on time and not skipping meals.

The best type of coconut for your health

If you are ever in a Indonesia, you have to get your hands on these coconuts. They are called “kelapa hijau” they are different from your normal coconut because when you slice it open, you will see a pink coloured inner skin instead of your usual yellow/brown. (Keep in mind that the water inside is clear not pink). These are much healthier than your usual bottled coconut water that you buy in the supermarkets.

They are not as common as the normal coconuts but you can get these from the local markets or ask your local friends.

Try to drink this everyday and you will feel a difference in your health, skin, and digestive system!

“Green coconut/Kelapa Hijau”

“Normal coconut”
They are good for cleansing your body from toxics and negativities and they have many benefits including:

1.  Neutralize posion and free radicals in the body

2. Coconut water can improve blood circulation & cleanse the digestive system.

3. it doesn’t only improve your immune system, it also helps to fight various types of virus strains

4. If you have kidney stones, try to drink this regularly.

5. Coconut water can help with UTI

6. These coconuts are a great hangover cure

7. It is filled with electrolites and pottasium to help with blood pressure and organ function

Here is the one I had last time I was in Indonesia.. delicious and refreshing!

The Best and Natural way to Eat Your Salad

We know salad is good for us but did you know that the quality of your salad can decrease significantly after drenched with salad dressing?

Not only it is calorie-ridden, the freshness of the salad is contaminated with the oil or cream from the dressing. It is a pity as the dressing reacts with the vegetables causing them to lose their freshness, so you are not getting the good benefits from eating fresh veggies!

Can you feel the differences between the two above pictures? Try to feel with your heart.

Remember that similar to fruits, as soon as the protective skin has been cut.. the antioxidants will start decreasing so try to eat it as soon as you prepare it 🙂

FoodieGuru prefers to eats his salad without dressing 100% of the time.
Try to get into this habit, and after a few times you will not want to eat your salad any other way.

How clean is your air?

Buying ozone/oxygen generators and air purifier machines to filter the air in the household is becoming increasingly common.

Many are using these machines to effectively clean indoor air pollution and odours. However ozone is associated with adverse health effects.

For those who do not know what ozone is
Ozone is a naturally occurring product; its germicidal properties were first utilised over 100 years ago but it wasn’t until recently that we began to explore its true possibilities. It can be a natural bleach, fungicide, germicide or just a fumigator, all done without chemical intervention.

But available scientific evidence shows that ozone concentrations that are safe to breathe are unlikely to be effective in controlling indoor air pollution.

An ozone generator is a device designed to produce the gas ozone. Ozone is used effectively in water purification, but ozone in air must reach high levels to remove air pollutants.

Health experts warn that it is important to control conditions to ensure that no person or pet becomes exposed to high levels of ozone. Ozone also masks the odour of some pollutants by impairing a person’s sense of smell.

Further, ozone is not effective for killing bacteria or mould in materials such as air conditioning duct lining and ceiling tiles.

Exposure to ozone

  • Can cause eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, cough and shortness of breath.
  • May exacerbate chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma.
  • Is likely to increase hospital admissions and emergency room visits for respiratory disease.
  • Can also adversely affect indoor plants, and damage materials such as rubber, electrical wire coatings, and fabrics.

    How Ionic Air Purifiers Work

Ionic air purifiers  release a continuous flow of negatively charged ions into the air. Those ions connect with airborne particulates, making them negatively charged as well. Over time, all of those negatively charged particles group together, become heavy, and fall to the ground or onto nearby surfaces. They are removed from the air, but not removed from the room. Instead, they create a film of sorts on things around a room and can even be stirred back up into the air. As beneficial as ionic air purifiers may sound, they come with one very negative side effect: ozone production.

FoodieGuru strongly suggests not to use any of these unnatural machines in your home as it will affect your health significantly!

You can try other methods such as: Ventilation

  • Install an exhaust fan close to the source of pollutants or moisture such as the cooking stove, dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Keep the windows open as often as possible to allow air to circulate.
  • Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering.
